14 Practical Marketing Tips For Creatives

  1. Use the Notes App On Your Phone: Use your phone’s note’s app to capture caption ideas, phrases etc. when they come to mind so you don’t forget them. You can also save to do lists or a list of your favorite quotes that can become future content for your marketing material.

  2. Collaborate on Project To Share Marketing Audiences: Collaborating with others, even if you are in different industries, can lead to very interesting outcomes. For example, teaming up a fine art painter with a textile artist, not only could they come up with a very interesting product together, they will also cross-pollinate their audiences!

  3. Use Saved Folders In Instagram: Use the “saved” folders on IG to categorize items that you connect with. For example you can create folders for: ideas for me, things to buy, networking, galleries and open calls, etc.

  4. Build Your Brand Stories: When talking to collectors, pay attention to their stories and backgrounds. Not only does this build your relationship, but over time you may see common threads. This in turn will lead to improved communication with your current and future collectors since you’ll have better clarity on what connects with your audience.

  5. Take Photos On Your Own Using Video: When you are taking photos solo, take a video, strike a few poses, and then screenshot the video for images. The quality may not be as good but for social media they're “good enough” and it will help you learn what poses or angles you prefer.

  6. Fine Tune Your Video Skills: Take the time to sharpen your video making skills because research shows that video as a marketing tool is significantly more effective than static content. There are plenty of free tutorials you can watch and apps you can try (some that are completely free).

  7. Capitalize On Passive Networking on Zoom: When you are at a zoom meeting, networking or otherwise, right click on your name and click “rename”. Then add your social media handle and/or website in there (in addition to your name).

  8. Prioritize Regular Marketing Time: Use Google calendar, or a similar tool, to block time off and focus on your marketing strategy and related tasks. For some of us, it’s easy to get carried away painting and postpone creating social media posts and videos, newsletters, all the things.

  9. Use Photo Albums On Your Phone: On your phone create a folder of branded images (headshots, logo, product images) so when people ask to see photos, or if you need them for social media, they are readily available.

  10. Explore Marketing Books: If you are really struggling with wrapping your head around marketing there are a ton of fantastic marketing books out there filled to the brim with ideas and strategies you can try in your business! Set a few minutes aside every week to keep the overwhelm at bay. For visual artists, one of our favorites is “I’d Rather Be In The Studio” by Alyson Stanfield.

  11. Creating Event Content For Social Media: Write your event post before the post begins, and take your “thank you for an awesome night” photo at the beginning of the night. That way at the end of the evening, when you are too tired, you will already have it ready to share!

  12. Repurpose Your Content: Recycle and reshare content across all of your different platforms! Have an amazing breakthrough collection or a fun upcoming event? Share it on your social media, blog, and newsletter. Share it through word of mouth. You could even get printed materials!

  13. Never Apologize: On your stories or social media posts, NEVER apologize for not being on your stories or posting. Realistically, no one noticed and by pointing it out you are simply highlighting it. Even if your audience does notice, that means that they are already a raving fan of yours so they don’t care.

  14. Save Ideas As You See Them: Use browser bookmarks or Pinterest to save ideas you would like to explore and iterate for your website.
