Gut Check Moment
Are you building a business or enjoying a hobby? Both are valuable experiences but the actions and goals for each can be very different. In today’s episode we talk about some of the key factors used to differentiate a hobbyist from a business minded artist and what you can do today to get one step closer to your goals.
Hobbyist vs. Business Minded Artist: Which are You?
As creatives, our process will naturally ebbs and flow, but as an entrepreneur what makes our creative interest less of a hobby and more of an art business? No path is the wrong one if it is the right one for you and your dreams. But if you are looking to give yourself a “gut check” as you are pursuing the growth of your business the following factors can be used to differentiate a hobbyist artist from a business minded artist:
Artwork Logistics
Number of hours spent
Number of pieces produced
Sales (Income) - with galleries or online
Creative Practice
Finding your Authentic Voice and Message
Commitment to a specific style or process
Technical artistic development
Legal/Business
Business structure (legal registration) and taxes
Conscious choice of income streams
Growth
Pursuing exposure opportunities
Gain an audience and collectors (marketing and branding)
Having a serious/professional website
Discounts and Giving Work away for Free
Establishing your policies for donating artwork
Establishing your policies for who and what circumstances warrant discounts or free shipping
Want to advance your art business?
First Identify where you are at now, and then (based on your goals), make a plan for which of the above elements you want to spend more time on and move forward with.
