Artist Bio:
Caitlin Cary is a Raleigh-based fiber artist, musician and gallery owner. Her unique fabric collages have been collected and exhibited nationally. Cary is the owner and curator of The Pocket Gallery, where she shows her own work as well as representing and promoting the work of numerous Triangle area Artists. Cary was an artist in residency at Artspace from 2015 - 2020, and served on its board from 2016-2020. She currently serves on the board of the Longleaf School of the Arts.
Artist Statement:
I create two dimensional representational and abstract machine-sewn fabric collage called Needleprint using fabric samples, remnants and scraps that would otherwise be thrown away. I tend to focus on the built environment & I love the way that fabric functions to make the “hard” world softer, the way the stitch and the fray soften the straight line, and the way that the viewer’s feelings about fabric and its connection to warmth and comfort and also to style and expression are brought to bear on their impressions of the work. I also deeply value the “conversation” that I carry on with myriad artists who create the textiles that make their way into my pieces, which adds another complex layer to the re-use ethic of the work.
