Remix: Collaborative Art Exhibition
On view from September 3-25 2021 in the Upfront Gallery of Artspace
The creative process is different for every artist. So what happens when a piece in progress is taken away from one artist and given to another to “finish”?
This question is explored in Artspace’s exhibition “Remix”, featuring collaborative artwork from 18 tenant artists. Each featured artist submitted a work of art that began as a study, test, or was an unresolved piece that they felt stuck on. From there, the pieces were redistributed to other creatives and “reacted to”.
Giving these pieces new life, the Remix group collaborative project was conceptualized and organized by Artspace tenant artist Adriana Ameigh.
The artists featured in this exhibition include: Danyelle Lakin, Fernanda Batista, Adriana Ameigh, Oami Powers, Jackie Sanders, Alexandre Henrique, Clarence Heyward, Jim Hallenbeck, Ellen Hathaway, Tayler Drattlo, Davis Choun, Barb Cherry, Jane Cheek, Ryan Fox, Adam D. Cohen, Kathy King, Debbie Secan, Colleen Beesley.
“Silent Restraints”: A Collaborative Painting Between Jaclyn Sanders and Ryan Fox
Artwork: “Silent Restraints”, watercolor and acrylic painting, 2021
The piece that I complete began as a watercolor experiment by my previous studio neighbor, Ryan Fox. Reacting to the physical landscape depicted in his painting, I began to think about how we as a society interact with the man-made landscapes that we create around us. Although shared spaces, by definition, are available to everyone, they are often segmented in ways not seen in the physical world but rather felt and followed by the people who interact in these environments. Right or wrong, these boundaries exist. Although some boundaries are stronger than ever, others are slowly breaking apart and the restraints that these boundaries put on society are indisputable.

Remix Exhibition Mission:
Once the pandemic started, many artists experienced a creative block. Studio Artist, Adriana Ameigh saw a potential solution to this problem through the creative exchange of work among her peers. Instead of covering up, or tossing out, unresolved work, the art was swapped among the participating artists. The new recipients of the work approached the piece with fresh eyes and could incorporate their own style and techniques – resulting in interesting collaborations that reveal both artists' marks. In addition to the creation of new works, the project became an avenue for experimentation and discovery removing the boundaries of one's personal style or medium. Works of art that somehow became stuck, remained unfinished, or unresolved are reimagined and transformed by another artist and represent the power of community and collaboration.
