April: Adapting to the "new normal".
Unemployment dominated the USA this month impacting millions of lives, myself included. Reduced down to very minimal hours at my day job, I suddenly had more time in the day and yet less and less drive to dive into my creative practice.
As one who thrives off having a million things on my to-do list, managing my time, and scheduling my day in 15 minute blocks, apparently these skills do not translate when I have very little to do and a day wide open. Self imposed deadlines help but it has certainly been a roller coaster of productivity.
For this reason, my daily drawing series has become more important than ever! These two drawings speak a lot to my experience this month.
The first was inspired by Joy Drury Cox’s application series and documents my unemployment application experience. The second reflects the endless circle of calling the unemployment office and getting send to a voice automated machine 1-2-4 hang up 1-2-4 hang up. This process is everlasting and unfortunately has become part of my daily routine as my application is still pending. Frustration. Repetition. Restrictions. Lack of Control. Stuck. These were all daily trends this month.
Looking at the series as a whole, circles have also become more present in my drawings. As a shape that has no definitive end points, these circular forms have evolved into a symbol of repetition, confinement, movement and endlessness - understandably fitting for this time of uncertainty.
Are there any other trends or themes that you see in the drawings below? Explore them and let me know! I would love to hear from you.
